Fact Assessment and some games to practice addition and subtraction

In order to confirm whether the strategy is understood well, the child should be assessed. For Grade 2 kids the challenge in the assessment is to complete 20 equations in a minute.

I have attached the fact assessment with different levels.

There are few games to practice these addition and subtraction strategies. One of them is Al's Game board.

Below is the Board which has numbers from 1-99. Make cards with the different addition and subtraction equation. This is similar to snake and ladder where if you pick a subtraction its like getting bitten by snake.

Introducing Addition using strategies

There are different strategies used in addition to make it more simpler. They are referred as
  1. + 0,1,2 facts
  2. Doubles
  3. Inside Doubles
  4. Doubles +1
  5. Ten facts
  6. Combination of ten facts
  7. Using Tens facts
We need to begin by introducing +0, +1,+2 facts and these strategy should be with in 1-10 numbers for Kindergarten and the same should be increased to 20 for grade 1.

Once the child is comfortable with the 1st fact, next the Doubles should be introduced starting from 0-9.

Inside doubles: pretty simple logic to be applied. If the two number being added has a number between them, then that's the number to be doubled.

For Example: 5+3, the number between 5 and 3 is 4. Double of 4 is 8. Hence 5+3= 8. The same applies if its 3+5.

Doubles +1: This needs to applied when the number being added are having a difference of 1. In my words if there is no number between the 2 numbers that is being added like what we did in Inside doubles and the 2 numbers being added comes after each other in number system, then we need to double the smaller number and add 1.

For Example: 4+5, there is no number that comes between 4 and 5. Double of 4 is 8 +1=9. So 4+5=9

Refer the picture shown for the different facts for all these strategies from 1-10.

Tens Facts: This strategy is about what happens when we add a single digit number to 10. The 0 is replaced with the value that is being added. In other words the ones place value is replaced with the number being added.

For Example: 10+5 = 15 as simple as that :)

Combination of Tens facts: This strategy is all about knowing the different combinations within 1-10 which makes the total as 10. They are 7+3,3+7,5+5,6+4,4+6,2+8,8+2,9+1,1+9

Using Ten facts: In this strategy when we add 2 number we need to round up to 10(its more like using +1 or +2 most of the time) and then use the ten facts to add the rest.

For Example: 9+4 should be added as 10+3 which is 13. or 8+4 should be broken as 8+2 is 10, so the left over is 10+2=12
